How do I become a mediator?
Our volunteers are a key part of CMDC. Here are the steps:
- Get Involved with CMDC by helping us with special projects, fundraising, or by becoming a Community Ambassador. This lets you see how we work and make sure it's a good fit.
- Apply to become a mediator: We offer mediations exclusively in the Inclusive Model and require all our volunteer mediators to be trained in this model. We offer a 45-hour Basic Mediation Training about once a year, depending on our needs, and the next one is projected for Spring 2026. You can apply here.
- Applicants should attend an information session and may be invited to an interview with other CMDC staff and volunteers.
- Selected applicants are invited to participate in the 45-hour Basic Mediation Training course in exchange for about 175 hours of volunteer service over 2 years. Trainees cannot miss more than 1 hour total maximum.
- Practice: Once you finish the training, your apprenticeship training begins! Observe experienced mediators in action through 2 cases and practice your skills by co-mediating 2 cases with an experienced mediator.
